260 pubs and cafés

Groningen has much to offer after sunset. If there is one thing in this city, it is entertainment! Go out to dinner before going to the theatre or cinema. Regardless of the time, an evening out should be concluded with a drink afterwards. This is never a problem, because Groningen entertainment has no fixed closing hours; do not be surprised to see people going off to work in the morning and the market being built up as the last pub crawlers head home. Many students live in the city, ensuring a bustling nightlife both during the week and in the weekends.

Hang out

The uniquely located Ellebogenbuurt district has a high density of wonderful pubs and cafés. Quiet cafés alternate with lively student pubs, and this is also a wonderful place to go for a drink after dinner. The entire south side of the Grote Markt is an enormous complex of mutually joined pubs and discotheques. With over 20 bars, including Drie Gezusters, Tapperij, Blauwe Engel and Groote Griet, this complex is the largest beer serving point in the Netherlands. &ZO at the Poelestraat is a trendy lounge establishment. Dance long into the night in the white interior, enjoying a delicious cocktail… During the day, visit the News Café in the Waagstraat for a drink in a hip establishment.

Belgium in Groningen

This pub has the best of Belgium and The Netherlands. The Pinterlier sells 14  draught beers and about 71 different kinds of bottled beers, among wich are some very special castle beers.

Live music

Groningen city centre also has several cafés where live music performances regularly take place. De Spieghel at the Peperstraat is a real jazz café, and funk fans should visit Café Buckshot at the Zuiderdiep. Blues-rock fans can let it all out in Café Koster in ’t Hoogstraatje.
