The city of Groningen has a reputation to maintain where architectonic innovation is concerned, and it is prepared to recruit world-famous designers or make a considerable budget available for an architectural festival. Groningen has received several awards and the city has countless interesting buildings and marks from top architects such as Starck, Koolhaas, and Hejduk.


Modern Architecture

Groningen: “the most Italian city above the Alps”, or “Sienna of the north”: they may sound somewhat far-fetched, but as a result of the consistent use of yellow clinkers, the city evokes a somewhat southern atmosphere. The Groningen city planners were inspired by Italian cities, which is clearly reflected in the construction.

Monuments

The most important Groningen monument is the martini Tower which has overlooked the city for over five hundred years. But there is much more to see in this monumental city.
