Since the Groningen World Exhibition in 1903, Groningen has remained a festival city, whether sports, pop music, classical music, or theatre, the International Film Festival Rotterdam in Groningen or Swingin’ Groningen is concerned.

Noorderlicht

Noorderlicht is the largest and only annual international photo
manifestation in the Netherlands, and takes place alternately in
Groningen and Leeuwarden. View thematic exhibitions that
singularly combine social engagement and visual imagination.

Noorderslag

Annually during the second weekend of January, the current state
of affairs regarding Dutch pop music is reviewed. Dozens of acts
perform on seven stages in a sold-out Oosterpoort, covered by
national and international music press and broadcast live via 3FM
as well as a large number of foreign radio stations. Preceded by
EuroSonic, during which European bands perform on various
stages in the city centre, this is an unparalleled event in Europe.

Noorderzon

Annually in August, theatre, music and cabaret companies from all
corners of the world perform on the most wonderful outdoor stage
in the Netherlands: the Noorderplantsoen. A décor of attractive
lighting in centuries-old trees, innumerable stands and tents,
people around the ponds, and artists in the streets, a ten-day long
enchanting atmosphere is guaranteed.

The performing arts

The Groningen Blues Festival, late-night jazz in De Spieghel (almost every night). Be surprised at one ot the manu samll theatres. Pick up the weekly UIT leaflet at any café for the week's programme. Isnt's the foyer to the Images cinema in the Poelestraat what every art cinema foyer should be?
