G7: Pieterburen
Particularly famous as a seal village because of Lenie 't Hart's seal sanctuary, and starting point of the Pieterpad and walking-tours across the mud flats.
Seal sanctuary
The seal sanctuary in Pieterburen is “seal mother” Lenie ‘t Hart’s domain. Sick and weak seals are taken in, nursed, and cared for. View the seals or take a look in the sanctuary’s kitchen to see what they are fed. The visitor’s centre includes an exhibition and film about seals. There is an educational children’s corner, and a sandpit for the youngest.
Domies Toen garden
Formerly a clergyman’s garden, now a Groningen botanical garden. In the century-old parsonage garden, the stylish garden bower dating from 1710 figures next to monumental trees including red beech and golden ash. There are hundreds of rare plant types, mushrooms, butterflies, amphibians and birds. And have you ever heard of the existence of sweets plants? No? Find out about it and come see the liquorice plant and toffee grass.
Walking across the mud flats
The most impressive and grim landscape element in northern Groningen is the seawall that marks the border between the land that was once sea, and the sea that is sometimes land, the Dutch Wadden. Walking across the mud flats is a wonderful way of enjoying the wonderful Wadden Sea area. A walk across the mud flats starts with the salt marshes. This part of the Wadden is dry during high tide, which has allowed highly diverse flora and fauna to develop. A bit further down, at the fascine dams, the area becomes bare and muddier. Participants then reach the sandbars wich are only visible during low tide. One or more tidal gullies and trenches have to be waded through.
