To make the choice somewhat easier for you, we have picked out 7 markets you will enjoy. 

Fort Bourtagne (Vesting Bourtagne) Christmas Market

2, 3, 9, 10, 16 & 17 December 2018 - During the first three weekends of December, the historical heart of Fort Bourtange is transformed into a real winter paradise. The bridges lit up, the many stalls and the immense Christmas tree in the Market Square (Marktplein) provide a very special atmosphere. It’s not without reason that this Christmas market is one of the most popular in the north.


The Swedish Christmas Market at the former Suikerunie complex

9 & 10 December 2018 - On 9 and 10 December, you can shop to your heart’s content at the former Suikerfabriek (Sugar Factory) in Groningen, where the beet harvest literally set the daily rhythm in times gone by. Find a sheepskin for your hearth, pick out a nice pair of handmade mittens or make your home even cosier with winter home decorations. Last year, the Swedish Christmas Market had more than 8,000 visitors, and this year it is even bigger, more enjoyable and surprising, and with even more music.

Dickens Day in Beerta

17 December 2018 - On Sunday 17 December, for the eighth year in a row, the Dickens Day theme will take over the village of Beerta completely. You’ll think you’re back in the world of the legendary writer Charles Dickens. This pleasant Christmas market has grown into a unique and enjoyable Christmas event in Eastern Groningen with approximately 100 stalls. The market stalls offer a variety of goods and introduce you to a number of traditional crafts. From stylish Christmas decorations to local products, and from clothing to collectibles.


The Old Dutch (Oud Hollandsche) Christmas Market on the Fraeylemaborg estate

16 & 17 December 2018 - The Old Dutch Christmas Market on the Fraeylemaborg estate takes visitors back in time. On Saturday 16 December and Sunday 17 December, you can relive the atmosphere and cosiness of the holidays of yesteryear. Christmas huts are erected around the keep, along with a skating rink where you can hone your skating skills to perfection. A nice fire, Christmas trees, and all the Christmas lights add to the whole atmosphere; Christmas music and traditional snacks and pea soup complete the winter scene.


WinterWelVaart in town and country

9, 13 & 15 t/m 17 December 2018 - The maritime history of the city and province are the main theme of the WinterWelVaart event. But the programme also includes a special Christmas experience. The Christmas market offers a wide choice of winter products, art, antiques, snacks, and trinkets. You can also enjoy music and theatre on the historical charter ships. The festival docks in Zoutkamp, Appingedam and Winschoten on 9 December, in Garnwerd and Werf Wolthuis on 13 December, and finally in Groningen on 15-17 December.

16 December 2018 - The ultimate Christmas feeling reaches its high point at the Christmas market around the historical Coendersborg in Nuis-Niebert. On 16 December, the beautiful keep will again be completely permeated by the Christmas spirit. With stalls filled with Christmas goods, atmospheric lighting, wintry snacks and Christmas music. With a bit of luck, you’ll run into Father Christmas.


Christmas Market Martinikerk

16 December 2018 - After the successful market last year, the Martinikerk will open its doors again this year for a cosy Christmas market. Come by to sample the authentic Christmas atmosphere in the way our neighbours to the east experience it. Nothing is spared in transforming the church into an atmospheric Christmas market once again.The fantastic effect produced by the light show on stained-glass windows is something you can look at for hours.
