Attractions

If you have no fixed plan yet, be inspired by a list of attractions in the Province of Groningen; visit a Groningen estate house, a museum, or fortified town. Simply choose one of the many options.

Seal sanctuary Pieterburen

Seal sanctuary Pieterburen

Pieterburen is known for its Lenie ‘t Hart’s Zeehondencrèche (seal sanctuary) where, for almost forty years, sick seals and seals washed ashore are taken care of, with the ultimate goal to release them back into the wild. The seal sanctuary has a visitors’ centre where the treatment and care of seals can be seen from up close.

S.T.A.R.
On the Veendam station, that dates from 1909, travellers wait for an old large steam locomotive. This is one of the stations where the historic trains of the S.T.A.R. (Stichting Stadskanaal Rail; Stadskanaal Rail Foundation) stop for passengers. It is clear that the train is coming long before it is actually visible: large wisps of steam are blown into the blue sky and the loud hoot can be heard above everything

Estate houses

Estate houses

Groningen estate houses are magnificent countryhouses that were owned by the former aristocracy and which include moats and beautiful gardens. Only sixteen left, many of them are dilapidated. The Menkemaborg in Uithuizen is among the most well-known and this house from the 14th century is certainly worth a visit.

The Bourtange fortress
The pentagonal shape of the fortress was designed as the ancient and original plan prescribed. Using old drawings and maps, the image from the history books came to life in the entire vicinity, not in the least because cannons are fired on a regular basis.
